Abstract
Sustainable cooling is an increasingly important part of meeting the cooling demand for thermal comfort in buildings. Adsorption cooling facade systems (ACFS) are one approach to address this by utilizing solar energy on the buildings facade for sustainable indoor cooling. The ACFS’ cooling potential is provided by a facade-integrated adsorption- desorption cycle, driven by solar irradiation. The performance of the hybrid nonlinear system highly depends on ambient conditions. To efficiently operate the system, an operational strategy is necessary. This paper proposes a model-based oper- ational strategy using optimal control. The evaluation shows a performance improvement by up to 45 % for the temperature peak overshoot above the target value compared to the rule- based operation.
